Epidemic hepatitis B with delta-antigenaemia among Dublin drug-abusers.

چکیده
ONE hundred and fifty-eight cases of hepatitis B have been detected among Dublin drugabusers from January to August 1981 during an epidemic which originated in 1980 and still continues. The mean age was 21 years and the male/female susceptibility to hepatitis B was the same. An unusually high proportion (29%) of a sample of 50 tested had the hepatitis B associated delta antigen in their serum and confirms that the delta agent is probably common in drug addicts and not confined to Italy.

Serologic markers for delta agent were evaluated in 39 patients with acute hepatitis B and clinical relapse within 30 days from the initial episode. Eighteen of the 39 patients (46%) had evidence of acute delta infection. Delta antigenaemia preceded the appearance of antibodies in seven of these 18 patients; delta antigenaemia occurred during the initial episode of illness and the appearance of...

The epidemiology of HIV infection and viral hepatitis among injection drug users (IDUs) is changing in western countries; reductions in the epidemic of blood-borne infections, such as HIV infection, and viral hepatitis among drug users are probably related to the generaliza‐ tion of harm-reduction interventions and to the treatment of both HIV/AIDS and substance abuse. Opioid substitution thera...
متن کاملChanges in incidence of hepatitis B in Ireland from 1970-1987.
This paper analyses data on 2,226 cases of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection detected during the years 1970 to 1987. Of those where information on risk-group was available (1,301), infection among intravenous drug-abusers accounted for the largest proportion (49%). Most became infected during and since an outbreak of hepatitis B and Delta hepatitis which originated in this group in 1980. A comp...
